EAST MILLINOCKET — Stephen Stanley is a 62-year-old former mill worker in East Millinocket who is nearing the completion of a degree in Public Policy. Now a State Legislator, he describes the life transition that he has undergone thanks to pursuing degree studies through University College and its Center in East Millinocket.
The closing of the local paper mill has presented many challenges. Stanley realizes that reorganizing and re-creating a community takes time. Stanley knows that community will return, but it will take committed and educated individuals thinking creatively to accomplish this. Having a resource like University College in the community provides access to people in the community who want to stay local but realize they need a college degree to prepare themselves for the future.
Through a combination of face-to-face classes and distance courses, Stanley will soon receive his degree in Public Policy through the University of Maine at Augusta. He strongly recommends University College. Having an education makes a difference to understand where one is and why things are the way they are.
