University College at Rumford/Mexico (UCRM) has been part of the River Valley community for nearly 30 years, moving back and forth across the river now twice. We have, for those 30 years, been proudly supporting and serving an average of 275 students each semester, graduating roughly 30 each year. That means approximately 900 River Valley Community Members have achieved their educational goals and brought those skills back into our area in fields such as Nursing, Mental Health Services, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, and Justice Studies and more.

UCRM is a true representation of community building together. The new Center is a jointly funded project, shared equally between the River Valley Technology Center and the University of Maine System. Each party showing its commitment to the community, their spirit of persistence, and their hope for a bright future through matching quarter million dollar investments and willingness to collaborate.

We hope this new, highly visible, centralized space will act not only as a beacon of academic aspiration, but also as a space that will welcome in our neighbors and partners. UCRM now has the potential to host business and agency meetings. In addition, through our increased video-conference capabilities, UCRM can provide the same flexibility and ability to work at a distance to our community.

This Center demonstrates that Western Maine students and communities are important to the University of Maine System. UCRM students can expect the same quality in academics and support services as students on campuses throughout the state. Our move to the heart of the River Valley reflects the forward looking vision of all who participated in the re-creation of this valuable community asset.

Thank you to all who helped build this – together.

Lisa Cooper, University College at Rumford/Mexico Center Director
