Special Ed. Certification
People interested in becoming certified as Special Education teachers in Maine have new opportunities thanks to a collaborative program crafted by the University of Maine at Augusta, University Maine at Machias and University College. Students will no longer have to live on or commute to a campus to earn the course credits required to become certified in Maine, and can even fulfill student teaching requirements locally.
As part of the new agreement, students would enroll in UMA’s Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program while completing all of the courses (including student teaching) that are required to be fully certified by the Maine Department of Education. For those who already have a bachelor’s degree, post-baccalaureate options are also available.
University College advisors offer a range of student support services, including placement testing, financial aid assistance, tutoring, and more.
Courses in the program are available online and through a variety of distance learning modalities. For more information about the Special Education program, please contact 1-800-868-7000 or visit learn.maine.edu/courses.
