Special Education Teaching Certification
University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine at Machias
This collaborative agreement between the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) and the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) brings a special education certification program statewide. Students earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from UMA while taking special education courses from UMM, including 15 hours of student teaching at a school district near the student’s home.
At the end of successful completion of the UMM/UMA Special Education Certification program requirements, students are qualified to submit applications to the Maine Department of Education for their two-year initial certification.

Note: The State of Maine requires any applicant for teacher certification to have taken and passed both the Praxis I and the Praxis II tests. Applicants who have not graduated from a Maine program approved for the education of kindergarten through Grade 12 teachers will also have to take the Praxis II PLT (or complete an approved alternative studies program).
