About Off-Campus Library Services

Off Campus Library Services (OCLS) serves students from the seven University of Maine System campuses taking courses delivered via interactive television, video conference, or live at a University College center, as well as online courses whether blended in format or entirely web based. OCLS also serves faculty who teach distance courses and provides support for University College center and site staff in a collaborative effort to serve the distant education populations.

The goal of OCLS is to provide library services equivalent to campus-based library services. To that end OCLS facilitates remote access to library resources by providing a comprehensive web presence and access to professional librarians through live chat, email, and telephone methods. The OCLS website additionally promotes self-help guidance through research guides, tutorials, FAQ’s, and forms. Each year OCLS routinely exceeds the number of students and faculty it supported the year before, demonstrating that as the distance education populations increase, the department’s efforts in serving them have been welcome and effective. During the last year OCLS:

  • Assisted over 1,300 individual patrons
  • Provided over 60 hours of live chat and email research help each week
  • Simplified the electronic reserves process for instructors with an easy to understand copyright compliance guide

OCLS Librarians collaborate with colleagues in all University of Maine System libraries on a regular basis, contributing to shared library resource tutorials, circulation and acquisitions committees, and other general library-customer services groups to steer resources towards the specific needs of distance learners. The collective work of these entities allows OCLS to enhance the services for both students located at a distance and the campus-based students with evolving off-campus library needs.
