Pioneering Female Detective Recommends Justice Studies at UC

Ellsworth Police Detective Dotty Small remembers the days when police officers were judged on their ability to handle physical confrontations effectively. Those days are long gone. As a pioneering female police officer in Maine, Small has seen significant changes that have redefined the job and its demands. From the advent of computers, community policing, knowledge of the legal system, and much more, Small says that flourishing as a police officer, probation officer, corrections officer, or one of the many other positions in the modern criminal justice field requires exceptional preparation.

Surveying the diverse jobs available in the criminal justice field, Small sees near unlimited potential for hiring opportunities and job growth for those who are prepared.

She strongly recommends Justice Studies through University College (UC) and its eight Centers in communities across Maine. Close to home, Small has regularly visited the UC Center at Ellsworth, offering her insights about careers in criminal justice to both students and those who are exploring the field.
