The University of Maine at Fort Kent offers an associate degree in allied health with a concentration in health information technology (HIT). HIT professionals are responsible for maintaining components of health information consistent with legal and ethical requirements set forth by accreditation and regulatory agencies. Health information data are collected and analyzed to determine quality health care practices and ensure positive patient care outcomes.

HIT professionals report on health information data results for reimbursement, risk management, utilization management, and to support accreditation standards. HIT professionals provide indirect patient care by ensuring health information is accurate, complete, and accessible when needed yet kept secure.
