University of Maine at Augusta/University of Maine at Presque Isle
This collaborative agreement between the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) and the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMI) brings an elementary (K-8) education certification program statewide.
Students earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from UMA while taking education courses from UMPI, including 15 hours of student teaching at a school district near the student’s home. The program offers options for people who don’t yet have a bachelor’s degree, as well as for those who currently have a degree but wish to prepare for a career teaching K-8. Both options adhere to the State of Maine Department of Education certification requirements.
For those without a degree:
- Enroll in UMA’s Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
- Complete a Minor Declaration form in Elementary Studies (see Option Two)
- Work closely with an advisor to ensure that you take the appropriate UMA liberal arts and UMPI education courses to meet state requirements, using the Advising Guide
