Meet the VAWLTers!

Here to help!

Virtual Academic Writing & Learning Tutors can help you with any of your writing assignments and goals.

Michelle Lisi, CoordinatorHello, all! As Coordinator of the VAWLT, I am privileged to team with talented students and terrific educators in delivering writing support across the UMaine System. I also love my work in distance education as a part of the University College Instructional Design and Development Department. A poet and short story writer, I earned an MFA in Fiction Writing at Columbia University before moving to Maine to open a video store in Brunswick, and to work in writing centers and teach English and Humanities courses. I love coffee, my 7 year old, and my two cats; hate team sports, gender-normative children’s programming, and the word “moist.”

Emma-Marie Banks, VAWLTerHi everyone! My name is Emma, and I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences. I love to help people, and especially help people learn. I am an avid outdoors-person and spend most of my free time finding something to do out in the wilderness. I live on a mountain in Maine, so that helps. I love to help people with the writing process and I like to try to think about writing assignments in a creative way; I am always looking for ways to make remembering little rules easier. Let me know how I can help you!! :)

Michelle Roderick, VAWLTerHello everyone! My name is Michelle, and I am in my third year at UMA. I have seven children, including my niece and nephew who live with us. We love to hike, fish, and go four wheeling. I love to write both academically and for fun, as well as help others learn the writing process. I am always thinking up little rhymes or songs to help me remember certain grammar rules. I have even shared these with my children’s ELA teachers. I look forward to working with you and helping with any of your writing needs.

Ellen Rollfs, VAWLTerHello! My name is Ellen, and I am a junior at the University of Southern Maine but am originally from the suburbs of Massachusetts. I am majoring in Linguistics with a concentration in Deaf studies and have been working towards fluency in American Sign Language. My favorite things include making faces at babies when their parents aren’t looking, horrible chick flicks, and dogs that look like their owners. I hope to work with people learning English as a second language and spend as many days as possible at the beach after graduation. Happy writing!

Hello all, my name is Stacey and I’m the Acting Director for Off-Campus Library Services. I hold a B.A. in English with a minor in Journalism. I also took classes in advertising, graphic design, speech and communications during my undergraduate days… in other words, I had a difficult time settling in a major! I also have my M.S. in Library Science and I’ve worked in the libraries for 12 years. I love helping students see research as a journey and scholarship as a conversation. The most important elements of my life include my partner, my son and daughter and my parrot, Kiki. I used to be a competitive figure skater and I now live on coffee and kindness.

Hello, everyone! My name is Dana, and I am a Library Specialist with Off-Campus Library Services. I am working towards my B.S. in Information and Library Sciences, and I am confident to graduate in the Spring of 2018! I will be the first in my line of ancestors to have gotten my degree. My favorite things to do include hiking, being outdoors, reading, being with my beautiful family, traveling, photography, trying new food, watching sports and going to the movie theater. My goals are to learn to play violin, learn German, draw/paint, and become proficient at woodworking like my dad.

Greetings! My name is Keariel, and I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Maine at Rockland. I’m currently a Liberal Studies major but am considering a degree in a foreign language, English, or Philosophy, or perhaps something entirely different! Writing and editing are passions of mine, and I love to share that enthusiasm with others and to offer any help that I can. I’m quite fond of cats, antiques, art, and the German language, as well as long walks in nature. I look forward to helping you with your writing!

Hi there! My name is Kristen, and I am a senior at the University of Maine at Farmington. I am majoring in Secondary/Middle Education with a concentration in English. I have always been an avid reader and writer. I also love helping people learn. I find that one of the most rewarding experiences is the moment in which something starts making sense in someone’s head during the learning process. In my free time, I am writing my first young adult novel, singing in an acappella group, binge-watching Netflix, or hanging out with my dog and cat. I am excited to help you through the journey of becoming a better writer!
